- Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) — PPHN is a condition that prevents a baby’s body from receiving all of the oxygen it needs. Following birth, a newborn’s circulatory system must make the change from relying on the mother for oxygen-rich blood to relying on the lungs. If this change does not happen or fails to fully implement, the body will suffer a lack of oxygen that can be detrimental and possibly fatal.
