Stryker Spine Plate

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and manufacturer Stryker recently notified healthcare professionals about a Class 1 Recall of Stryker's OASYS Midline Occiput Plate because of post-operative fracture reports. Class 1 recalls are the most serious kind of recall, issued for defective or dangerous products/devices that could potentially cause severe health problems or even death.

The Stryker OASYS Midline Occiput Plate is part of the OASYS Occipito-Cervico-Thoracic System used to promote fusion of the cervical spine and occipito-cervico-thoracic junction (Occiput – T3). Used in cervical spinal fusion surgeries, the Plate provides stabilization at the junction between the occipital bone and the vertebrae in the cervical spine.

According to the FDA, the Stryker OASYS Midline Occiput Plate has been associated with post-operative fracture of the pin that connects the tulip head to the plate body. This fracture can cause serious side effects including blood loss, nerve injury, and possibly revision surgery to replace the fractured component.

The Class 1 recall was announced in August 2013. Leading up to this announcement, on May 30, 2013, Stryker issued an Urgent Medical Device Recall initiating a recall of the device. They requested that all medical facilities examine their inventory and immediately stop distributing or using the recalled lots, and to return any affected products. The following month, on June 20, Stryker notified spinal implant surgeons about issues with the device and recommended routine clinical and radiographic post-operative evaluation for patients with an implanted OASYS Midline plate.
