2012 Ford Focus
On September 7, 2015, The Safety Institute, a non-profit organization that focuses on consumer safety, released a Top 15 Vehicle Safety Watch List. The Watch List was created with the support of the parents of a young women who died as a result of the well-publicized GM ignition switch failures. According to their website, The Safety Institute analyses publically available data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) using a “peer-reviewed analytic methodologies to identify potential motor vehicle safety defects that merit additional engineering and statistical review.” At the top of the Watch List sits the 2012 Ford Focus because of over 100 complaints related to the vehicle’s power steering suddenly and without warning ceasing to work. Without fully functioning power steering a car can be difficult if not impossible to steer. Secretary for Transportation Anthony Foxx was quoted in a recent news report as stating that the NHTSA was aware of the Watch List and the reported issues related to the 2012 Ford Focus. Secretary Foxx said the NHTSA was looking into potential issues with the 2012 Ford Focus.
Reported 2012 Ford Focus Power Steering Complaints
To date there have been well over 100 power steering complaints related to the 2012 Ford Focus. A December 2014 complaint stated:
“I WAS DRIVING ON I271 WESTBOUND. FROM WHERE I GOT ON TO ENTERING THE EXPRESS LANE THE NOTIFICATION OF STEERING FAULT SERVICE NOW. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO WHERE I WAS GOING WHICH WAS UNDER TEN MINUTES AWAY AND ABLE TO PROPERLY STEER IT WITHOUT IT COMPLETELY LOSING THE STEERING. AT MY LOCATION IT WAS WHEN THE STEERING WENT. THE POWER STEERING RACK IS WHAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WHICH WAS MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO TURN. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. IF I WOULD OF LOST IT ON THE HIGHWAY, THERE COULD OF BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND OR DEATH.
A January 2015 complaint stated:
WAS DRIVING WITH MY MOM WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HER POWER STEERING GAVE OUT AND IT WAS INCREDIBLELY HARD FOR HER TO STEER. I TOOK OVER AND DROVE HOME NOW I DROVE VECHICLES WITH OUT POWER STEERING BEFORE BUT THIS WAS BY FAR THE TOUGHEST STEERING VECHICLE I DROVE. IT WAS COMPLETELY DANGEROUS AND IRRESPONSIBLE OF FORD TO NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE AS OF YET. THANKFULLY I WAS WITH MY MOM THAT DAY AND NOTHING WORSE HAPPENED BUT IT COULD HAVE ENDED ALOT WORSE.”
